History & Causes

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

History

Stevens Johnson Syndrome was first described in 1922 as a generalized cutaneous (skin) eruption with inflamed buccal (bubble-like) mucosa and purulent conjunctivitis (eye infection). After studying two young boys (ages 7 and 8) who had first been diagnosed with a type of measles and then with Erythema Multiforme (EM), Dr. Stevens and Dr. Johnson concluded that the condition they were observing "deserves to be considered a definite entity." Today, some researchers believe that Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is a form of Erythema Multiforme. Other researchers believe that Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is an independent syndrome.

Causes

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is most commonly caused by an adverse reaction to drugs or medication. Research indicates that Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is usually triggered by an allergic reaction, often to drugs such as NSAIDs, antibiotics (including sulfonamides) and anti-convulsant drugs (seizure medications) as well as many other kinds of drugs. Researches have recently found that the popular drug Bextra may be a primary cause of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Children's Motrin, Daypro, Feldene and a host of other drugs have also been liked to the disease. For a list of drugs that have been implicated in Stevens-Johnson reactions, click here.

Up to 80% of TEN cases (the severest form of SJS) are attributed to drug therapy. SJS and EM-minor are also associated with medications. Antibiotics have a strong SJS association as do non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, anticonvulsants, and topical and systemic ocular (eye) medications.

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome may also be triggered by an infection and/or a virus such as herpes.

The exact cause of the disorder is unknown. It is believed to involve damage to the blood vessels of the skin with subsequent damage to skin tissues.
